Van leasing vs van rental

By · Updated 14 October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

Rental is priced by the day and includes almost everything, which makes it expensive per day and perfect for short or uncertain needs. A lease is priced by the month over a term, far cheaper per day, and only sensible once you know you need the van.

They solve different problems

A rental answers "I need a van, starting tomorrow, for a while." A lease answers "this van is part of how the business runs."

Rental is built for uncertainty. You take it for days or weeks, insurance and maintenance are usually bundled, and you give it back when the job ends. You pay for that flexibility in the daily rate.

A lease is built for certainty. You commit to a term and a mileage, and in exchange the cost per day falls dramatically. Commit to the wrong thing and you are stuck with it, which is the trade.

Where the crossover sits

There is no universal break-even, because rental rates move with season and location and lease rates move with the vehicle and the term. The shape of the answer is stable, though.

For a few days, rental wins outright, no lease is worth arranging.

For a few weeks, rental usually still wins, because you are buying availability and no commitment.

Somewhere past a couple of months, the arithmetic turns hard against rental, and it keeps turning. By the time you are renting continuously for a year, you will usually have paid several times what the same van would have cost on a lease.

The honest test is not the daily rate. It is this: would the van stand idle if you had it? If yes, keep renting. If it would be out earning every day, you are renting a vehicle you should be leasing.

The trap: rolling a rental on, month after month

This is the most expensive pattern we see, and it is never a decision. It is the absence of one.

A van is needed for a fortnight. The job overruns, so it runs another fortnight. Then there is a second job. Nobody ever sits down and decides to rent a van for a year, but a year is what happens, at the daily rate, with nothing to show at the end.

If you have renewed the same rental three times, stop and price a lease against it. It may still come out in rental's favour, but make it a decision rather than a default.

What we do, and what we do not

FleetMe supplies business contract hire to limited companies and LLPs over terms up to 12 months, and vehicle hire to sole traders over terms up to 12 months. Our shortest agreement is three months.

We do not do daily or weekly rental. If you need a van on Tuesday for a fortnight, a rental company is the right call and we would rather tell you that than sell you a three-month agreement you do not need.

Where we are worth a conversation is the moment the need stops being temporary, when the third rental renewal comes round, or when a contract lands that will run for a year.

Put a price on it

Tell us the vehicle, the term and the annual mileage you need and we come back with a written quote, and we aim to do that the same working day. Rentals are quoted ex VAT with the VAT-inclusive figure alongside, and your agreement is with FleetMe.

What does your business need on the road?

Vehicle type
Can you supply any make or model?

The vehicles on our stock list are the ones we hold a rate for, so they are the quickest to quote. Anything else we source to order, which takes longer and is priced individually, so ask and we will tell you what it costs. Every figure on this site is a guide price: availability and factory lead times move, and we confirm the exact vehicle, term, mileage and monthly rental in writing before anything is agreed. If we cannot get what you have asked for, we will say so.

FAQs

Is van rental cheaper than leasing?

Per day, no, rental is the most expensive way to have a van. For a short or uncertain need it is still the right answer, because you are buying flexibility and availability rather than the lowest cost per day.

How long can I rent a van before leasing makes more sense?

There is no fixed crossover, but the arithmetic turns against rental somewhere past a couple of months and keeps turning. The practical test is whether the van would be out earning every day. If it would, price a lease.

Does FleetMe do short-term van rental?

No. Our shortest agreement is three months. For a few days or weeks, a rental company is the right call and we will say so.

Is insurance included in a lease?

No. Rental typically bundles insurance; a lease does not, so you arrange your own commercial cover. That is one reason the cost per day is so much lower on a lease.

Can I put my livery on a rented van?

Generally not, and that is often what pushes a business towards a lease. A leased van can be liveried and racked, provided it is returned to the agreed condition at the end.
