Who can lease a van from FleetMe?
FleetMe supplies vans and commercial vehicles to UK businesses on business contract hire, and the hire agreement is between your business and us. We work with limited companies, LLPs and partnerships trading in England and Wales, from a first van to a small fleet.
You do not need to be an established business with years behind you. Companies incorporated a few weeks ago are assessed on their own merits alongside the people running them. What we do need is a real business, a vehicle that suits the work, and a monthly rental the business can comfortably carry for the length of the agreement.
If you trade as a sole trader, or you want a vehicle in your own name rather than the company’s, tell us when you enquire. The assessment is different and we will explain what applies to your situation before anything is agreed.
What is actually assessed?
Six things carry most of the weight, and only one of them is a credit score.
The company itself: how long it has existed, what it does, its Companies House record and its business credit file. Late accounts, an overdue confirmation statement or an unsatisfied county court judgment all count against you — and all of them are fixable.
The directors: commercial underwriting looks at the people standing behind the business, particularly when the company is young. Personal credit profiles, three years of address history and previous directorships are all part of the picture.
Affordability: whether the monthly rental sits comfortably alongside what the business already pays out. This is where business bank statements and management accounts do more work than any score.
The deal itself: the vehicle, its value, the term, the annual mileage and the initial rental. A standard panel van on a longer term with a healthy initial rental is a different proposition to a high-value tipper on a short term with the minimum upfront.
The work and the sector: heavily converted vehicles, very high annual mileage, and vehicles used for hire and reward all change the shape of the assessment. Tell us up front — it saves everyone time.
Existing commitments: what the business already runs on finance or hire, and how those payments have been maintained.
What do you need to provide?
Nothing exotic, and most of it you already have.
For the business: company name and registration number, trading address, what the business actually does, and business bank statements covering the last three to six months. Send filed accounts or up-to-date management accounts if you have them, and your VAT number if you are registered.
For the directors: full name, date of birth and home addresses for the last three years, for each director. For whoever will drive, licence details.
For the vehicle: the model, any conversion or racking you need, the term, and the annual mileage you realistically do rather than the mileage you hope to do. Understating mileage does not save money — it moves the cost to the end of the agreement as an excess mileage charge.
For a newer company: anything evidencing the work coming in — a signed contract, a subcontract agreement, a purchase order, or invoices already raised and paid.
How is the decision made?
You tell us what the business needs. We come back with a written quote showing the vehicle, term, mileage, initial rental and monthly rental — ex VAT as the headline figure, with the VAT-inclusive figure alongside.
If the quote works, we take the business and director details above and assess it. We aim to come back with a decision in principle the same working day in most cases. Cases with less history to read can take longer, because a person reads them properly rather than a score deciding it.
A decision in principle is not the final agreement. Nothing is committed until the paperwork is signed, and the figures are confirmed in writing before that point. We will never ask you to sign something you have not seen.
What happens if the answer is no?
Sometimes it is, and we would rather tell you quickly than string it out. If we cannot help we will say so and explain why.
Very often the reason is specific and fixable: accounts overdue at Companies House, a judgment left unsatisfied, a vehicle that is more than the evidenced affordability supports, or simply too little upfront. Change one of those and the answer can change with it. We will tell you which one it was.
We work best with good and fair credit profiles. Businesses with adverse credit are looked at case by case, on the facts, and never with a promise attached.
How we work: FleetMe supplies the vehicle and the agreement is with us. Limited companies and LLPs hire on business contract hire over 24 to 60 months; individuals and sole traders hire on short-term rental for up to 89 days. Quotes are indicative until your vehicle, term, mileage and monthly rental are confirmed in writing.
Who we can help: We work best with good and fair credit profiles. New limited companies with no trading history are genuinely considered — commercial underwriting looks at the business, not just years of accounts. Adverse credit is reviewed case by case and we will always tell you honestly if we cannot help.

Questions, answered
Can a new limited company lease a van?
Yes. A company incorporated recently and with no filed accounts is genuinely considered. Because there is little company history to read, more weight falls on the directors, on evidence of the work coming in, and on the initial rental you can put down.
Do I need filed accounts to lease a van?
No. Filed accounts are among the strongest evidence a business can offer, but they are not a gate. Business bank statements, management accounts, VAT returns and signed contracts do the same job for a company that has not filed yet.
Is business contract hire only for limited companies?
It is designed for businesses — limited companies, LLPs and partnerships. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, say so when you enquire and we will explain what applies before anything is agreed.
How long does a decision take?
We aim to give a decision in principle the same working day in most cases, once we have the company and director details. Cases with less history take longer, because they are read by a person rather than settled by a score.
Will you tell me if my business is unlikely to be accepted?
Yes, and early. If we cannot help we will tell you honestly and say what would need to change. We would rather do that than leave you waiting on an answer that is not coming.
Who is the agreement with?
FleetMe. We supply the vehicle and the hire agreement is between your business and us, so your quote, your contract and your point of contact are all in one place.
