For start-ups going from nought to a fleet

Fleet leasing for start-ups

Yes — a start-up that is a limited company or LLP can lease several vehicles from FleetMe on business contract hire. The assessment scales with the number of vehicles, so expect a fuller conversation than for a single van.

Going from nothing to a working fleet is a very different proposition from leasing one van. You are committing to a monthly cost that arrives whether the contracts land or not, and you are asking to be assessed on a plan rather than a trading history. It is entirely doable — it just deserves a more honest conversation than a one-vehicle deal.

How big a commitment is a start-up fleet?

Every vehicle is a fixed monthly cost for the length of its term. Four vans on three-year contracts is a substantial obligation that does not flex if a contract you were counting on falls through. The practical approach for most start-ups is to lease what the confirmed work needs now and add vehicles as the work is won, rather than sizing the fleet for the business you hope to be in a year. Shorter terms cost more per month but reduce how far ahead you are committing — a trade-off worth pricing rather than assuming. We will show you both.

Why stagger the start dates from day one?

The most common avoidable mistake in a new fleet is putting every vehicle on the road in the same week on the same term. Three years later they all come off contract at once, which means every vehicle needs replacing in the same month, every end-of-contract inspection lands together, and any cash-flow squeeze is concentrated. Staggering deliveries by a few months, or varying the terms, spreads renewals across the year. It costs nothing to plan and it is very hard to unpick later.

What does underwriting look at for a new company?

The same three things as a single-vehicle application — directors, affordability, trading credibility — weighted against a larger total commitment. No filed accounts are needed, but a start-up asking for multiple vehicles should expect questions about contracted work, and may be asked for a personal guarantee from a director or a larger initial rental. Have your company details, director information and any signed contracts or purchase orders ready. If the answer is no at the size you asked for, we will usually be able to say what number would work instead.

Not a limited company?

Business contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, what we can supply is short-term vehicle rental of up to 89 days instead. Incorporating is the step that opens up business contract hire over 24 to 60 months, which is why plenty of tradespeople do it before taking on a van.

Common questions

Can a start-up lease more than one vehicle?

Yes, though the assessment scales with the total commitment. A newly formed company asking for several vehicles should expect more questions about contracted work than one asking for a single van.

Should I lease all my vehicles at once?

Usually not. Leasing for confirmed work and adding vehicles as contracts are won keeps the fixed cost matched to income, and staggering deliveries stops every contract ending in the same month three years later.

Will I need a personal guarantee for a start-up fleet?

It is common where a company has no trading history and is taking on several vehicles. If one is required it is set out in writing before you commit, alongside the initial rental and monthly figures.

What if I can only be approved for fewer vehicles?

We will say so, and usually what number does work. A partial yes is more useful than a flat no, and you can add vehicles later once the company has some trading behind it.

Can an unincorporated start-up do this?

Not on contract hire — that is for limited companies and LLPs. A sole trader would be on short-term rental of up to 89 days, one vehicle at a time. If the plan is a fleet, incorporating is effectively the first step.
