Cars are treated differently to vans
Two differences are worth knowing before you compare a car rental with a van rental. HMRC blocks 50% of the VAT on a car lease rental because it assumes some private use, where the VAT on a van rental is normally reclaimable in full. And where a car emits more than 50g/km CO2, 15% of the rental is disallowed against taxable profit — a restriction that does not apply to vans at all. A company car also creates a benefit-in-kind charge for the driver, which is why low-emission and electric cars dominate company fleets.
